new toy

Recently, [livejournal.com profile] wafflelips realized that owning a laptop had switched from being a neat idea to being necessary. After spending a fair amount of time reading reviews and pestering Mr. [livejournal.com profile] woe2you and [livejournal.com profile] king_ghidorah for advice, she decided on the type of gear she wanted. She then sent me out with instructions to purchase the gear while she did homework.

I follow instructions rather well. We're now the proud parents of a lovely little HP notebook. I'm using it right now to update, hitch-hiking on a neighbor's WAN. I'm enjoying myself, but I know that any minute now T will decide she'd rather do her work on the new toy, at which point I'll be booted off.

Still. Yay!

A Harry Potter laptop? Isn't using magic with muggle technology forbidden?

Isn't there something especially sweet about piggybacking on someone else's unsecured wireless network?

Only if the Ministry of Magic finds out. ;)

Yes indeed there is. There are at least 2 to choose from in this area; sometimes we can pick up a third. Heh.

Thinking of wireless access, the Living Room on University has free access to their WAN before 7:00pm, I believe Gelato Vero has free access all day, and last I talked to the guy at Wit's End, he was thinking about having free WAN access there, too. You have to pay for access at Urban Grind and Twiggs. I don't know about Lestat's (I'm usually there , and there is no access at the Hillcrest Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, nor is there any at Claire de Lune. And Sip This next to Frock You on Park has free wireless access for customers. Rumor has it that Starfbucks has wireless access, but I can't bring myself to check. Not that I have spent any time at local coffee shops. And not that I do any sniffing for wireless nodes when I'm there.

Oh no, not at all. And not that I will jot this information down for future use. Oh no.
