Asking for it

'Cause I'm bored. If there's any pressing question you'd like to ask me, feel free to do so now. If you want to know something about me, have me explain something to you, whatever. Today is Random Question Amnesty Day in my lj.

what exactly are you studying, and do you have a fancy white lab coat and do you peer into boiling/smoking beakers? This is what you do in my imagination when I think of you at work.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-12 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I make tools that help people detect and measure the amount of DNA in a sample. For example, if someone wants to measure the amount of a bacteria in a patient sample, or the amount of tumor marker, etc they could use the tools that I make. I don't do the romantic fancy stuff (anymore) but I make it possible.

Yes I wear a white lab coat with my name on it. I also wear safety glasses (OHSA regulations) and most of the time have nitrile gloves on. Nitrile is like latex, except non-allergenic. And they're bright purple, which I find amusing.

Sadly, there are no smoking/boiling beakers. In fact, as I work with biologicals everything either needs to be at body temperature or on ice. But I do work with lots of big machines that whirr, click, and have fancy computers attached to them.

How long have you been involved in singing? All the way back to 7th grade chorus or is it something you picked up along the way?

and I got a second: did you ever get that tape I sent? I don't care if you watched it right away, I'm just wondering if our trusted mail service got it there?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-12 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I started singing when I was 5. One Sunday at church, the children's choir performed. Afterwards I turned to Mom and said "Mommy I want to do that." The only time I wasn't involved in some musical group was when we lived in Phoenix, aside from that I've always had some music outlet.

2. Yes I did, sorry for not letting you know. I look forward to watching it. :)

OK this is a totally canned question, but the answer still interests me:

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Married to a therapist with her own practice...

I've never been able to answer that question. I try, and I never have an answer. I just kind of am.

[identity profile] chumm.livejournal.com 2005-01-12 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's where you see T in 10 years, but I'll take it :)

In the ladies' restroom of a busy nightclub.

How'd you get interested in science? What kind of degree do you have?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-13 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Senior of high school, I had an advanced science class that was my first exposure to biochemistry. Prior to that, I really wasn't interested in science; I'd planned to major in mathematics. But the realization that all these crazy chemical reactions were going on in every cell in my body blew me away. I had to know more. So I got a bachelors degree in biochemistry.

After that, it was a matter of taking what I knew and applying it to biomedical research. I got a masters degree in pharmacology and molecular sciences.

Good enough, or do you want to know more?

Is there an opportunity that presented itself at some point in your life that you now wish you had taken advantage of/explored?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-13 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I was offered a research job my senior year of college at Battelle Institute in Columbus. It would have been a great opportunity and learning experience.

what do you consider your greatest accomplishment in life thus far? what are you most proud of in your life?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-13 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
My marriage. I surprised myself, didn't think I had it in me.

You're assuming I identify with a hero; big assumption.

Hey am I too Late?

[identity profile] lizardsmae.livejournal.com 2005-01-14 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the most risque thing you have ever done?

Re: Hey am I too Late?

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2005-01-14 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I've been thinking about it and I don't know if I've done very many risque things in my life. I've done questionable things, dangerous things, obnoxious things, reckless things, but not really risque things. I have, however, been witness to a few risque things.

There's one event that's particularly memorable, involving my friend Dano. But that's not something I'll tell online. Poor boy deserves a little privacy. ;)
