Back at UC Santa Cruz, our annual perk was a big picnic where they gave us hot dogs, popcorn and punch plus up to 2 hours of release time. Usually there was a lame speech, too, that usually amounted to "quit yer gripin', cuz yer lucky ya have jobs. You are all expendable. Enjoy the freakin' picnic." The administration never understood why attendance was so poor. So relatively speaking, the free pizza sounds pretty good.
But the loss of a nice time to meet with your whole team really does do a lot to dampen that sense of connection. Corporate culture sucks.
