how exciting

Apparently HP notebooks in the same series as mine are buggy.

Time to work up the energy to call their Tech Support and make them fix my 'puter.

OI MADENGLISH:
i talked to tech support, they're gonna have me reset the jumpers and then when if that doesn't work i'll send it back and they'll replace the mobo.

Well, at least it's a covered defect...

Happy Thanksgiving in advance!

theyre expecting you to open up a notebook yourself, and reset some jumpers?

first off, jumpers??
on a notebook?
thats crap design - there arent many jumpers in desktop units these days, and the only ones are usually in non-accesible spaces, so why they would be in a portable is beyond me.

and, im while im pretty au fait with opening up any desktop unit, even im loath to open up a laptop - this could just be an excuse to declare this YOUR fault, rather than replace/repair it.
ok, so it SHOULD be easy enough - but its not something i would advise anyone to do if theyre not used to poking around the innards of their machines - its not as if its going to be something simple like some RAM or something like that.

i know! and if they've seen enough of these problems to know that, in most cases, they'll have to replace the mobo -- why make me open up the box on the ridiculously low chance that resetting something will correct the problem? send me the packing materials and take my friggin' computer in for repair. or refund me my cash and i'll get a different, non-vista box.

sorry, my bad. they had me reseat the ram and the hard drive. i'm so surprised that those tactics didn't fix the problem! :/

they're arranging for shipping and repair right now.

Good luck! I hate working on computers. My laptop took a shit not too long ago. I had Chad look at it for me. I still haven't put all the programs back on. Dreading that part. I hope you have a great holiday! Are you cooking?
