Some Mondays are bigger than others

Don't ask me why I have the Smiths stuck in my head. It's not a condition that pleases me, in fact I'm doing everything I can to get them the hell outta there! Currently I'm listening to Maxwell and he's helping to evict them. Cross your fingers, cats.

Well I may have an idea-- last night I heard a cover of "Please Let Me Get What I Want." That's quite possibly the most self-pitying miserable little song ever written, and I don't understand why anyone would want to cover it. May as well just cover "I Know It's Over:" Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head... I know that similar themes are addressed in blues music, but you almost never run the risk of getting your ass kicked for listening to the blues. Crikey.

(See. I told you I'd been wanting to use "crikey." I finally gave in. Hopefully the urge will now pass.)

[livejournal.com profile] virginmartyr1 and I had no luck at the Border's this weekend. Apparently no one knows about college a capella groups. Super neato goodness. So I need to dig around to find any music. Lookit me dig. Dig, me, dig!

Love the lethargic mood pic. It's new, eh?

You used "crikey" twice over the weekend. You may not remember, but I do.

Did you check Lou's records? It's Lou's, right? So even if they don't have it there, can a trip there really hurt? We may be going to N. County this weekend anyway...a stop there couldn't hurt. Well, it could hurt our checking account.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
1. Yes it's new. It works, eh?

2. Did not recall that. Maybe it'll be harder to get it out of my head than I thought. Dangit!

3. Didn't check Lou's but that's a reasonable idea. Like I'd say no to that...

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Yes, it does. Very well.

2. You love it. Crikey, crikey, crikey. Crikety, crikety, crikety. Hee!

3. I didn't expect that you would say no. That'd be cause for concern.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:39 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Hee! I lurve Dexter.

2. I think it's an effort on the part of my common sense to stop saying "Christ!" so much. At least at work. And since you laughed the one time I exclaimed "Criminy!" I'm left with little choice.

3. Whee! Lou's Records!

So does this mean we are going to the birthday thingy on Saturday? If so, I will inform [livejournal.com profile] bobamster.

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
2. I don't remember that incident. Hmmmm.

3. Sure, why not!

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
2. Maybe I said "criminently." But it's kind of the same difference, right? Anyway, yes you laughed. A lot.

3. Cool! Should be fun!

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
LOL I like the Smiths :) Of course, the worst thing is I used to really, really like Morrissey's solo stuff. Eeek!

*ducks*

It was high school, so I thought I was cool :)

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah well, you get a free pass then. ;)

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*looks around guiltily*

I still kind of like Vauxhall and I.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*whispers*

I won't tell anyone. ;)

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks :) I will admit to liking the Smiths, but usually laugh along with everyone else about Morrissey's solo career, although saying quietly "but Vauxhall and I was a good album".

In fact, I could even be wrong about the title. I'll do some checking.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't get me wrong, I like some Smiths. I'm just over the "pity me pity me" stuff. :)

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
VIVA HATE! That's the name of the album I liked :)

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
See, now that's MUCH better! ;)

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
*looks around again*

I bought it off of half.com. Shhh...don't tell :)

[identity profile] sionnain.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually kinda excited.

I will NOT order Bona Drag though ;)

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My god woman, show some restraint!

[identity profile] king-ghidorah.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know that similar themes are addressed in blues music, but you almost never run the risk of getting your ass kicked for listening to the blues.

The Smiths do not have the blues. They are melancholy, but they do not have the blues.

The blues are about life. Pain, sorrow, loss, poverty, jail... sure all that sad stuff is important, and often confused with the core ethos of the blues. The blues instead happens to recognize key truths of buddhism, that life is inseparable from suffering, and that suffering comes from wanting what you can't (or just don't) have.

The Smiths seem to be more about whiny suburban angst. Ugh.

Besides, the Smiths were a buncha wimps. Bessie Smith woulda taken a razor to the lot of 'em, and then shot 'em all when they ran in fear. Then she would have had a drink and slept with a man who would then sleep with her best friend. The she'd cut him, too.

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
::snort::

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's still kind of funny. The notion of Bessie Smith getting all over the Smiths.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this image better: a shaven-headed Bessie Smith garbed in saffron robes, sitting on the floor chanting.

Om, rama lama ding dong

Now THAT'S comedy!

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You are funny. This is one of the reasons I love you so much.

[identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I think you should now graduate from 'crikey' and move on to other stalwarts of expression such as 'gosh' and 'I say'.

And I'm not just saying that because I am apparently Giles.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I already say "gosh." I don't know if I can pull off an "I say," though. Don't quite have the credibility.

Maybe if I wear my glasses more often. Hmm.

[identity profile] wafflelips.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"I say" doesn't suit you.

But glasses do. :-D

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah yeah yeah...

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
virginmartyr1 and I had no luck at the Border's this weekend. Apparently no one knows about college a capella groups. Super neato goodness. So I need to dig around to find any music.

*sniff sniff* i remember a certain me gave you some music...what am i, chopped liver? i realize it wasn't the best quality and some of them were very short snippets. but i'm special too. LOL. it's freaky how much time can be sucked away looking for downloadable college a capella music. ooo, i forgot to tell you yesterday about a group from Mt. Holyoke that didn't have any music i could download, but who i love. they're called "nice shoes" and they're a feminist (and some or mostly lesbian) who sing feminist music. they rock! while they do not have music available to download, they do have music playing on certain pages of their site. http://www.mtholyoke.edu/org/shoes/ :)

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You are neither chopped nor liver. I was referring to the dearth of music at the stores we visited. Not to the oh-so-helpful disc you stayed up until the wee hours of the morning making for me.

Thanks for that and for the link. I will investigate. :)

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-26 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)

ok got it. i feel validated now. :) i feel that the lack of any college a capella in any music stores in san diego is further proof of the decline of our civilization.

another fun a capella site: http://www.bacs.org/col_groups.php this is a list of all college (*and some prep schools i think) a capella groups in the boston/new england area and links to the websites. there are TONS. boston and the greater new england area is obviously not experiencing the same decline in civilization as we are here. hee

There may be more than one sign, but it is obviously the biggest one. Sca-ree!

You are Little Miss Helpful this evening, what with all the urls you're finding for me. You get a gold star

*grin*

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-27 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
You get a gold star since I know you just love that kinda crap.

yes it's highly likely that part of me never got out of first grade grade mentality. the idea of obtaining gold stars is fun and exciting. and the prospects of two recesses and maybe a little quiet time in the middle of the afternoon aren't too shabby either.

speaking of urls for a capella groups: I also like to go to the CASA page ( http://www.casa.org/boca_info.html ) that has info about the BOCA cds. then I look-up the webpages for some of the groups. the CASA page also says that they should have their master directory of groups updated and running this month, so that should be a good resource as well.

it is, however, times like this when i miss napster, which is where i initially got the bulk of my downloaded a capella music. I've tried morpheus and kaaza, but neither of them work even a smidgen as well as napster did in during its golden years. ah well.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-27 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)

Ooh, with cookies! Do we get cookies? You throw in cookies and I'll get behind this gold star/1st grade scheme.

re: newest url

Good heavens, it'll take me forever to work through all this stuff. Slow down! (ps thanks!)

Are you saying you used to do something that wasn't entirely legal? No, I can't believe it!

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-27 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying you used to do something that wasn't entirely legal? No, I can't believe it!

*shock gasp intense looks of disbelief* nooo, not i. ok, well yes when it came to napster...although it wasn't until the big lawsuit thing that i realized, hey this downloading thing is illegal i guess. and then i still used napster for all i could until it, first, had practically nothing and no one on it, and second, made you pay. then no more napster for me. i repent for my sins.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-28 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I am shocked, shocked! You pirate!

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-27 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
oh wait oh darn it oh shoot. i hit post before i meant to.

Ooh, with cookies! Do we get cookies? You throw in cookies and I'll get behind this gold star/1st grade scheme.

yes, if you would like cookies, i'll throw them in to make you jump on the gold star, positive reinforcement bandwagon i know and love. *grin*

oh so i guess you probably don't want any other info at the moment. ok, i'll hold off. (ok but it has to do with two a capella events in LA coming up..inquire inside if interested). a capella is wheee fun...however, even though i've been listening to it way too much over the last few days, i still believe i would be absolutely horrible at trying to arrange the songs. so that's up to you slugger. may the force be with you. na nu na nu.

[identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com 2004-01-28 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, cookies!

Hey wait. Weren't we s'posed to get some rice krispies treats for chauffeur service? I seem to recall that we were.

re: a capella stuff

OK I'll bite: what are the events in LA?

[identity profile] virginmartyr1.livejournal.com 2004-01-28 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey wait. Weren't we s'posed to get some rice krispies treats for chauffeur service? I seem to recall that we were.

yes. i did not forget. i just have not made them yet...i will do so this weekend and get them to do. sorry for the delay in payment.

OK I'll bite: what are the events in LA?

Feb 21st at USC is the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Capella) West Region Southern California Quarter Finals. It is from 8-11pm (which is late and kind of sucky). Groups that will be competing include USC Reverse Osmosis, USC Sirens, Mt. SAC Fermata Nowhere, UCSB Naked Voices UCSD TriTones and U. of Arizona Vocal Ease.

The second event I haven't been able to find too much info on so i'm not entirely sure it's actually happening. but i read somewhere that the California A Capella Festival is March 6th at UCLA. details are pending my further investigation.

:)

i found more sites with music to download. it's a sickness. have you found you are brilliant at arranging songs? i hope so. cause it's not going to be my forte.
