“A giant snake, huh? And you had to blow up the school to take him out?” Faith nodded appraisingly and dragged on her Marlboro.
”You’re not gonna tell me you’re proud of him, are you? He was gonna kill the entire senior class, Faith. He almost pulled it off.” Buffy’s voice carried the tone of disapproval that her one-time adversary was all-too familiar with.
“It’s not that, B. I know he was evil. I know he had to be stopped. It’s just…I guess part of me misses him. It was fucked up and wrong, but in his own way he loved me.” Her voice wavered minutely. Buffy noticed but didn’t mention it. “And I needed to be loved. Simple as that.”
“Is it really? Just want, take, have and to hell with the consequences?”
“Didn’t say ‘want;’ I said ‘need.’”
“The difference being?”
“Want is simple; it’s direct. ‘I want this, so I do that.’ Like eating, or fighting. Or fucking.” She grinned. “Maybe there’s consequences, maybe there ain’t. But it’s always A goes to B goes to C. I should know; it’s the story of my life, man.”
“But need is different. You know how they say love makes you do things you’d never dream you’re capable of? Well need makes you do things you’d never admit you’re capable of. It twists you up, like those plants that grow around corners to get sunlight. And maybe a part of you is watching, wondering when the hell you’ll wise up. But you don’t. Not until you can get what you need some other way.”
“Yeah, I guess.” Unbidden, Buffy’s mind conjured an image of Spike throwing her against the wall and fucking her so hard her teeth rattled. She shivered at the memory and hugged herself. She cast a nervous glance over at Faith to see if she’d noticed, but she sat smoking, staring impassively out at the desert. Watching her, the oddity of the situation hit Buffy and she chuckled. “Hey, since when have you been Thoughtful Girl?”
Faith made a square with her hands roughly a foot wide. “Since I got stuck in a cell about this big with nothing to do but think. You should try it sometime.” Buffy rolled her eyes dramatically. “And hey, since when have you ever listened to me?”
Buffy feigned concentration. “Um, that’d be since you stopped trying to kill me.”
“Oh please, you’re the one who started it,” Faith grumbled.
“Oh please, you’re the one who went to the dark side and gave me no choice.” She heard a huff of mock indignation and grinned. “So tell me Yoda, how do we manage to get what we need without doing something horrible?”
“Hell if I know. Before I got that far I had to bust out and come save your sorry ass.”
Buffy looked at Faith and shook her head solemnly. “Then we’re doomed,” she intoned. Both girls burst out laughing, earning an odd look from Giles.
Faith glanced at Giles who was now giving a weak but indulgent smile to the two eldest slayers; at Andrew and Dawn tending to the wounded; at Willow talking quietly with Xander; and at Robin who smiled when she caught his eye. “I dunno B, maybe not.”
Buffy looked back toward Sunnydale. The dust from the collapsed Hellmouth hung in the air, coloring the sky a deep crimson as the sun set. The sight caused a strange tickling lightness in her chest, of possibility, of hope. She smiled. “Yeah, I guess not so much.”
