I read this yesterday: my take is that the author said that Bush II can't have it both ways-constitutional and evangelical. If that is what he is saying his premise is false. I guess this is where you get into more than one truth .This is why these people scare us; to them there is no separation of church and state. We are the "city on the hill";this is to them a God centered democracy. Unless of course it's the Catholics, Jews. etc.
This is why we scare them; complete separation of church and state, things like say right to abortion or the right you to marry whom you want. We have a great divide that only grows as each group pursues the "pursuit of happiness"
I agree that Bush et al believe there shouldn't be a separation of Church and State: my take is that the author doesn't think they're doing a good job either way. I like the quote about "Succor the poor doesn't mean sucker the poor."
I always have to contrast Dubya et al with someone like Jimmy Carter; both men are very religious, their faith influences their daily activities and policies and they aren't shy about admitting it. Yet Carter has done things like negotiate cease-fires, Habitat for Humanity, won a Nobel Peace Prize -- while Dubya has virtually destroyed the middle class in this country and created a financial chasm between the haves and the have-nots.
I think you and I are basically in agreement here. What's going on in DC scares us both.
