Last night I started learning how to use one of these:

shinai

I am a little stiff today but I don't care. I got to hit people with a sword yesterday, and it was good.

You learnin' to be a kendoka?

No, I'm learning how to do renaissance-era fighting; practice is done with shinai. Although I must admit once the shock of "OMG I'm holding a sword" wore off, that weapon felt pretty good in my hands. I might look into learnin' to be a kendoka.

Renaissance-era fighting is probably more fun. Being a kendoka is a bit more meditative.

Watching western swordplay is something you can cheer on and watch play back and forth. Kendo is more about watching to people stand still until somebody twitches and then it's all done.

Yeah, this was much more "grrrr arrrrgh" kind of fighting. Lots and lots of fun. I have so much to learn, so much muscle memory to build up.

I briefly fenced sabre, and sometimes think of trying to find a way to pick it up again. It was fun, but definitely takes lots of practice....

Always does, this is true. It's plenty worth it, though. :)

Awwwwwwwwwwwesome! :D

I've always wanted to learn fencing and/or SCA-type armoured battle, but my health precludes it.

I never gave it much thought until I was living with my friends the last few months. There's a group that practices in the neighborhood park, and I noticed that I would slow my run to watch them practice. Then I'd come to a walk to watch them practice. Then I would just stop and watch them for a while. Hmmm, I thought. perhaps I should give this a try. ;)
