No, I'm learning how to do renaissance-era fighting; practice is done with shinai. Although I must admit once the shock of "OMG I'm holding a sword" wore off, that weapon felt pretty good in my hands. I might look into learnin' to be a kendoka.
Renaissance-era fighting is probably more fun. Being a kendoka is a bit more meditative.
Watching western swordplay is something you can cheer on and watch play back and forth. Kendo is more about watching to people stand still until somebody twitches and then it's all done.
I never gave it much thought until I was living with my friends the last few months. There's a group that practices in the neighborhood park, and I noticed that I would slow my run to watch them practice. Then I'd come to a walk to watch them practice. Then I would just stop and watch them for a while. Hmmm, I thought. perhaps I should give this a try. ;)
