This time, photos are for [livejournal.com profile] gonzo21 who wanted to see my bookshelf, my favorite plant, and a view from one of my windows.

I had trouble picking one plant, hence the multitude.

bougainvillea the morning light catches the paper-thin flowers of the bougainvillea and the whole bush glows faintly. this picture does them no justice.

Gosh, to live somewhere that Birds Of Paradise flowers just grow in the wild. Amazing.

Heh. I once heard somebody describe the palm trees in LA as the worlds most crass trees, because they were 'The ejaculating penis trees'.

Yours seem much more refined than that.

Also... *looks suspiciously* Did you tidy that shelf before you took the photograph?

Yep. They are ridiculously extravagant flowers. They're like, the drag queens of botany.

There are some palms that are "ejaculating penis" trees, but that's just one variety. I particularly enjoy the ones that look like enormous pineapples. They're short and squat and just jolly looking.

No Simes, I didn't tidy the bookshelf. I do not jest when I say that I am really that anal.

Is it true that they evolved that way to attract brightly coloured birds to come and check them out?

And gosh, I admire your tidy bookshelf, almost as much as I fear it.

Well, I don't know for sure. But the spathe (the part that looks like a beak) is strong enough to support the weight of a bird. And the flower petals on top open very nicely to provide nectar, get pollinated etc. So, even though I'm not certain, I expect that they did evolve that way to attract birds. Nifty, eh?

ph33r my anal-retentiveness, you're not the only one who does. ;)
