Last night I was all set to post a long rant about Schwarzenegger declaring his candidacy for the governor in the recall election. Lots of stuff about his lack of qualifications, experience, familiarity with the issues; also some things about the Californians who say they'll vote for him, refer to him as the Governator, and in general don't have a good grasp on the difference between reality and movies.
But today, with Gary Coleman, Larry Flynt, and possibly Gallagher in the race, everything takes on a different look. Namely, the look of a three-ring circus.
So I decided to skip it altogether. No use bashing my head against the wall. Instead, I'm going to mention Laurel Canyon a film which is only remarkable for the fine performance turned in by Frances McDormand. However, one scene --one piece of dialogue, rather-- is stuck in my head. In the scene I'm thinking of, the character played by Christian Bale, who's a psychiatry resident, is tempted to have an affair with a colleague. When they confess their mutual attraction, he tells her that he's engaged and that they have to take the high road, which would be sublimation. (His exact word choice; it's very clinical of him.)
Now, the missus is a psych type, so I'm well aware of the meaning of sublimation in that context. However, as I am a biochem type, I immediately think of sublimation as a thermodynamic process. So now I have this notion of using a thermodynamic metaphor to describe a psychological process--and it's not as complicated as I'm making it seem. Anyway. It's rolling around in my demented brain. More to follow.
