in case you're ever in ann arbor
Aug. 8th, 2007 04:40 amA rec. The Arbour Brewing Company. This is not a high-falutin' place. This is a dim, noisy crowded pub with a varied clientele. What encouraged me to enter were the appetizing smells coming from the place, and the Pride sticker on the door. I was not disappointed.
The place boasts an impressive 13 house beers on tap with wide and knowledgeable selection of "guest beers" by the bottle. This wasn't just "we have a Hefe and an IPA, call us a microbrewery" endeavor by someone with a little time and a scant education about beer. This place was all about beer; from the decor to the slow pour of the porters. I was convinced I'd come to the right place when I scanned the menu and saw there was a section "wheats wits and lambics." I can personally vouch for the Brasserie Blonde Belgian-style ale and the Red Snapper Bitter. Hello my friends, so nice to meet you.
Although the food was typical pub fare it was mighty tasty too, . I had a patty melt made with locally raised grain-fed antibiotic free beef, and it melted in my mouth. The cajun fries perked things right back up with just the right amount of savory spices.
The service was unremarkable but entertaining. My waiter reminded me of Keanu Reeves in his demeanor and attention span, but he was jovial and knowledgeable about beer. All in all, not something to count for or against the establishment in my opinion.
I give it a 3 out of 5 overall, but a solid 4 out of 5 for beer-lovers. Check it out if you're ever in the neighborhood.
