A day full of drama in the laboratory. Frenchie and Furry German had a full-blown row this morning. Lots of awkwardness ensued, and I spent much of my day hiding at my desk. I want to stay out of Furry's way; knowing him, he'd try to pick a fight with me. I'd gladly give him one if it weren't for the potential loss of gainful employment that might ensue. Oy.

The Hawk of Good Tidings (have I mentioned him? If not, comment and I'll explain) made an appearance this morning, which confused me until a pair of free baseball tickets landed in my lap. Padres vs Cubs tomorrow night. [livejournal.com profile] wafflelips procured them, but Craigaroo and I will be enjoying them. He gets to see a game in Petco Park before he moves back to KC. Sweet!

Home and comfort food are on my horizon. This is a good thing. I may also meditate; could be groovy after today's histrionics. Have I mentioned, oy?

It's a red-tailed hawk that lives near my company. We have a bit of history; I used to regularly run on some trails behind the building and I'd often encounter him. There are some weird stories related to that but I won't get into them just here.

Several months ago I pulled a muscle in my hip and stopped running on my lunch hour, but sometimes I still see him soaring around the building. And by some odd coincidence, when I see him in the morning there is usually something interesting/good on the horizon.

And the really crazy thingi s that I totally believe you.

No, seriously. I dig stuff like that.

Now tell me the other weird stories related to him. Please?

Well, we had sort of a routine. I'd start off running and pretty soon I'd see him. Once I was far enough away from the road, he'd sort of sweep back and forth across my path. Sometimes he'd already be out, sometimes I'd only see him after a bit.

Then one day, either he decided to get a closer look at me, or I bumped into him when he was feeling antisocial, I can't say. I came up the crest of a small hill and saw him perched maybe 20 yards away from the trail. He swiveled his head toward me, stared right at me and screeched. It was the most intimidating thing I've ever heard. I backed away from him slowly; he watched me until I was down at the base of the hill.

But there's the weird weird thing. A woman I knew was hit by a car while on her bicycle. She sustained massive head injuries and was put on life support for a while. There was no inkling of improvement so the decision was made to take her off life support. I got an email informing me of this around 10am. It upset me, naturally.

I went for my usual run during lunch and tried to clear my head. I saw the hawk, like always, but he wasn't swooping or soaring. He was just sort of hanging up in the sky. I looked at him for a while and then I did a totally uncharacteristic thing: I asked the hawk to fly Ramona's spirit to the next world where she'd be free of pain.

At first, I felt immensely better. At second, I felt enormously sheepish and silly. For heaven's sake, I'm talking to a bird. I looked up to have a good laugh, but the hawk was nowhere to be seen. Keep in mind, a) he'd been hovering right above my head and b) I live in Southern California, which is a desert. There are no handy trees for him to perch and hide. Where I ran is wide open with an unobstructed view but the hawk was completely gone from sight. I said "um, thanks" and resumed running.

When was Ramona's time of death? You guessed it, right around noon when I was having my run and talking to the hawk. Weird.

The free tickets must've balanced out some of the badness, right? And what's that saying, today is only for today or something like that. Those are my wise words to you. Or somebody else's wise words re-worded badly.

The free tickets and spending time with Craig balanced out a lot of things. Thanks for the wise words, even if they were someone else's. :)
