I've just had one of those odd moments, when a previously unchallenged assumption gets turned on its head. The long-held assumption in question regards the subject matter of the song "Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode. I'm listening to it as I work, and I realize that the song is most likely about drugs; we're flying high, never want to come down, etc. This seems pretty obvious to me now.

The thing is, for many years I was sure it was about sex; specifically, about a vaguely kinky gay BDSM sexual relationship. I think it was the line "promises me I'll be safe as houses as long as I remember who's wearing the trousers" that did it. That plus the fact that it's Depeche Mode; in the 80's they made a living writing about vaguely kinky vaguely queer sex. But not on this track. Bummer, dude.

I don't know if I like the song as much anymore. Oh well, I'll just delude myself that my old interpretation is correct and go along as usual.
