JK Rowling reveals Harry Potter loses another friend
(Filed: 08/10/2004) from the telegraph.co.uk

JK Rowling has revealed she has killed off another character in her latest Harry Potter book.

The best-selling author shocked readers by killing off a character in her previous book The Order Of The Phoenix.

Now she tells fans on her website that another character is to go in the sixth book, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.

Rowling was asked: "Are you going to kill off any more characters?"

She replied: "Yes, sorry."

The 39-year-old author has not revealed who it is - but assured readers it is not Harry.

The young schoolboy wizard survives until the seventh and final book, but Rowling is coy about whether he reaches adulthood.

Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince is due to be published next year.

Well yes, but after all the hoopla over the character she was going to kill off in the last book, and how upset she was, and everything. And it turned out to be a major character, who wasn't so much killed, as he was exiting stage left in such a manner that his return is virtually assured at some point. I'm somewhat less inclined to believe the whitterings of The Rowling.

I still think Harry is going to wind up having a breakdown, living out the rest of his days in an asylum.

Case of "ooh look, it worked *really* well, let's do it again". Why doesn't she for Christ's sake kill off a couple more of the annoying little runts.

Didn't mean to say major character there either. She said it was a major character, turned out to be a very minor one indeed. If she were to kill one of the major characters, then I might be impressed.

Did you hear that boarding school attendances are going up because, they say, of the Harry Potter books?

Perhaps we should engineer a revival of Tom Brown's Schooldays, just to show the buggers it's not all fun and games?

Oh, I think they figure out it's not all jolly hockey sticks themselves, pretty quickly.

I really am very oppossed to boarding schools in most cases. Where it gets kids away from abusive parents, then it can be a good thing. But all other cases...

And I don't understand why people have children in the first place, if they want to send them to boarding school. Surely the point of having kids is so that you can spend as much time as possible with them?

My parents would disagree. Hell, once they get over a certain age any parents'll disagree. Personally I favour the barrel method, but my folks decided to send me off to school instead; it was either that or the salt mines and luckily I won the toss. And I'll say this for public schools: having been through the system, nothing else can ever inspire quite the same horror again.

That certain age being something over about the age of 2 weeks huh?

And gods yes, the public school system. I'm actually in two minds as to whether it's any better or worse than the private school system.

My bad, I meant "private". An unfortunate transposition fostered by the school system in question.
