I have just finished a masterpiece in Crayola which I will now send to my 5 year-old niece. The last time she was at my folks' she made a picture for me, which she then made Mom mail. I figure I ought to return the favor. So I've made a self-portrait geared toward the preschool set, gesturing toward the refrigerator where Devon's picture is proudly displayed. The cats made a special guest appearance, as well. They insisted.

The style is vaguely Picasso-meets-cave painting, but I think its audience will be appreciative.

Very true, but at this point how else may we see this work of art? I think a Windows Paint version will have to suffice.

I LOVE crayons, everybody should have a set within close reach and use them regularly. How big is your set? Were you one of those in school who brought in the box of 64 with the sharpener when all that was required was the sixteen? and would you share your gold and silver crayons?

When I used to help out in preschool and kindergarten you could see different coloring styles. Some were perfectionists, some would color with fury bordering on anger, others indifferent. I wonder if their personalities and life stories were mapped out on manila paper.

One more thing, a few years back while browsing in a college book shop I found a box of-I don't remember what they were called. They were (lord help me!) ethnic crayons, so people of color could color people something other then peach. I still have them, they are the most beautiful set of browns!...I went and found them; copper, raw sienna, sepia, burnt orange etc. and peach! I hope they still make them, though I think having them in a college book store was a little to late to help.

We have a little 24 pack, nothing too tremendous. In school I always wanted the 64 pack with the sharpener but Mom thought that was going overboard. She was probably right.

You might just be onto something.

my brother and sister jointly shared the 96 (with the sharpener)-it was grand! I was younger and allowed nowhere near until there was nothing left but bits and pieces, amother childhood scar.

I loved the metallic crayons! The bronze and the copper were even cooler than the gold and silver because they seemed so rare. I really should go draw something with crayons today!

For the record, I have not spent over $20,000 trying to get pregnant just to justify buying the ultra-big box of Crayola crayons.

I just consider it a right/perk of parenthood. :D

well thanks for explaining the money wasn't all spent just to get the huge crayon box. i was a bit worried for a few moments, was going to have a small talk with you about maybe how spend your energy and money on the things you actually want and not on something randomly related, and much more expensive. but thank goodness you explained.

crayons do have that strange appealing smell. freaky but true. they do not, however, taste good. so don't go there next.
