This has nothing to do with your entry, but I have a random question for you. What is your opinion regarding genetically modified organisms? I've meant to ask you and just happen to be thinking of it now.
Without sounding too much like I'm waffling, I think it really depends on the application. While the idea of strains of grain that is more resistant to drought seems all right, the notion of Evil Monsanto making GMO vegetables that are resitant to its patented insecticides seems a terrible misuse of science.
Ah, the potential abuse thing didn't occur to me. My ex Aja decided not to major in biology because she was so uncomfortable with the idea of GMOs so I always thought of them as this scary unhealthy thing until I was reading a book about genes, and it seemed like (in my very elementary understanding of the science) gentetically modifying plants wasn't all that different from what medicines do to us. (Does that make any sense?) So I was curious as to your views. :) Thanks.
In some really inocuous ways, it's just the same. Or in the sense of, you find a mutation or genetic variation in one strain of wheat that gives it an advantage so you put it into another strain. To me, that's really not very different from classical breeding ans genetics.
The Monsanto thing, that's true. And it's the kind of thing that makes me foam at the mouth.
