One day late, but not due to a lack of material. Today we feature Cynthia Ettinger, who plays Rita Sue on the HBO series Carnivale. She's an amazing, talented, luminous actress.
Carnivale is finally coming out on DVD over here, but the first season is absurdly expensive for a 12 ep season. Something in the order of £50/$100 as I remember. So. Not gonna buy that.
DVDs are often significantly more expensive here than they are in the States. Particularly for TV shows. There's also a lot of stuff that doesn't come out over here at all. Off the top of my head, Dead Like Me, and the thing I'm particularly after, Gilmore Girls.
There used to be a huge trade in importing American DVDs into this country, but the government have been busy stamping that out as much as possible by passing new legislation to allow the big companies to continue ripping us off.
La hey, gotta protect the Poor Corporations from the Tyranny of the Working Class. After all, every show you bootleg is hard-earned money out of the pocket of their expensive tailored suit!
with the way the dollar/stirling exchange rate is at the moment, you would expect to be able to pick up stuff over here for slightly over half what it is over your side of the pond... however, what many companies do is pick the US price, rub out the $, and slap on a £ instead! and they wonder why piracy is so rife!!
I've also noticed that P&P rates from America seem to be highly variable. Because I'm sure 4 years ago, I looked, and when you added on the postage to a purchase from Amazon.com, it was about the same price as it would be to buy it here. And then today, with the favourable exchange rate, add on the postage, and the price is *still* about the same as it would be here.
Something fishy is going on.
And they charge an absolute fortune for postage. It's shocking.
Video shops don't carry tv shows here. I think the online DVD rental places probably do them, but, they work out quite expensive compared to just buying the DVDs.
