OK, how is it possible that Starbuck is supposed to be straight? I so don't buy that.

She is SO not straight omg! Maybe she just has not realized it you?
Also. should I be irked at the fact the writers did not go out of their way to make sure the viewers know she is straght? I only saw the miniseries, so I have no idea what is going on now.

They're flashing back to the days leading up to Zach's death (Adama's other son) as a way to explain a lot of the characters' motivations and what ties them together. But damn if I didn't keep thinking "make Zach a girl and I'll believe this."

I so can not type! The above should read should I be irked at the fact the writers *went* out of their way to make sure the viewers know she is straght?

What would have been so terible leaving her ambiguously gay?
I only saw the miniseries, but she is the only character I remember at all. I think I watched just for her.

Well like Simon mentioned, having Starbuck engaged to Zach sets up an interesting dynamic between her, Adama, and Apollo which drives a lot of the character development on the show. Also, her (partial) responsibility for Zach's death goes a long way toward explaning her reputation as a rule-flouting risk-taking brilliant time bomb. Which, to my eyes, is a lot more satisfying than Orginal Recipe Starbuck who was a Han Solo-lite rogue.

But Kara Thrace-Starbuck should be allowed to be just as big a womanizer as Original Show-Starbuck. ;)

What would be a lot more satisfying would be if people didn't totally bastardize things out of any relation to the name they're blatantly cashing in on. That would be nice. Why, we might occasionally see an original film, too...

In my ideal world, retconning would be punishable by very slow flaying.

It is hard to believe isn't it. But then maybe that is why her love life is a disaster, because she has yet to come out to herself.

Either that or the writers just got hooked on original Battlestar series fics where Starbuck turned into a woman and had sex with Apollo. But probably the first explanation.

I think it's the Zack relationship that drives the whole problem. For the dynamic between Starbuck/Apollo/Adama to be the way the writers wanted, Starbuck had to have this relationship with Zack. Which drives a big chunk of the story.

Of course, they should have made Zack a girl too. And that would have fixed it.

They're revisiting it in the latest episode, and while it works as a driving force behind the Starbuck/Apollo/Adama relationship-- and actually, as a driver for Starbuck's behavior in general -- the flashback scenes with Zach just didn't cut it.

This is more the fault of the actress though, than the writing, would you agree?

Although, now I think about it... are we perhaps guilty of stereotyping here? Yes, Starbuck looks and sounds and acts gay, but... And of course, the one teensy problem with the Starbuck being gay thing is, she has had not one single slashy subtextual scene with any female character. Yet.

Hmm. I am rambling. Apologies. Not much sleep last night.

Well, we are falling into some gender-role stereotyping. However, she also has little chemistry with any of her male co-stars which may or may not have anything to do with her skills. She's doing a pretty good job of everything else, though, so I'm hesitant to blame it on talent.

For the record, I'd like to see her matched up with Boomer or the gal from Ops just to see what happened.

Boomer and Starbuck being hot. Well, there's something I Honestly never expected to say in the wake of the new BG.

ppft real likely in Hollywood of today!
Spongebob and some bunny show are being given shit for daring to say it is ok to be gay, can you imagine making a military character gay?

Yeah but it's a Sci-Fi series show; they get away with a lot more than other network tv does.

I have a high tolerance for bad sci-fi. I derive a certain joy from bad sci-fi.

Species III was unwatchable.

Ah yes, but Battlestar Galactica is at least half funded by a British company. The same british company that just brought us Hex - the big gay lesbian witch show.

Big gay lesbian witches? Jeez, that would just be live moving back to Santa Cruz.

I wrote a 'Hex In Five Minutes' fanfic a while ago that I think more or less nailed exactly what it was. But it's... an odd sort of show. I liked it a whole lot more than it deserved, it had a peculiar sort of british charm to it. And Velma the dead goth lesbian ghost witch was utterly adorable.

I think I might have the first episode on a disc somewhere, which I can run off a copy for you if you'd like.

Or they could just make Starbuck bisexual but that seems to be more controversial than having a character be gay sometimes.
That is probably caused by too many storylines where women have had a girlfriend who dies and then they end up with a guy again.

Do you think that the father/daughter dynamic between Adama and Starbuck would be the same if Zack had been a girl though.

Date: 2005-01-29 06:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com
That's an interesting question. If Zack had been a girl, I don't really think it would have changed the dynamic there at all. One of the things I remember from the original Battlestar was that they were a sexually liberated people. They had a prostitute character as I remember. And while this isn't something the series has really touched on, because they're far too busy doing space opera, I suspect it's still there.

One would hope that that far in the future, so far away in the Universe there would no longer be homophobia. At least one can hope...

From: [identity profile] gonzo21.livejournal.com
I remember reading a sci fi story once set in the far future, where because of the pressures of over-population, and the prevelance of genetic engineering and perfect test tube babies, straight sex had become the minority, and gay relationships was the accepted norm. With the pressure of reproduction utterly removed from the system, people discovered that they were able to have much more solid relationships with people of their own gender.

Date: 2005-01-29 06:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] blankbadge.livejournal.com
They haven't really touched on sexual mores much at all except from the perspective of personal lives interfering with people's job performance.

I think you're probably right that it wouldn't have changed the dynamic much. In fact it might have strengthened it considerably.

Yes, this is the one big change from the mini series. THe mini series was packed with sex. It seemed like every 5 minutes, somebody was shagging somebody. But in the series, I don't think there's been any sex at all. One or two flirtations with the cylon tha tappears in the docs head. But apart from that. Not much.

Date: 2005-01-30 02:49 pm (UTC)

That does kind of change.

Femslash not my thing, to be honest. Never found the girl-girl thing particularly exciting. I know that as a straight man that's supposed to really get my engine revving, but it just doesn't for me.

I can definately get that. And I do not presume that anything should or does get anyone going, each person is an individual.
I read anything as long as it is good. I think that a hot fic has more to do with how well the emotional content is dealt with, not with what goes where.

You are absolutely correct---except the actress has no sexual chemistry w/ any of the men. Perhaps she wouldn't have any with the women, either...
