2. You, of everyone I know, would be the most jazzed by David Foster Wallace's Everything and More. It's a history and explanation of the mathematical concept of infinity, without skimping on either the mathematical sophistication or the engaging prose.
3. Christine Fellows is the mathematical intersection of Kristin Hersh and Aimee Mann. You'd love her.
4. So many people, but I think you and [livejournal.com profile] wizened_cynic would hit it right off. I sometimes forget that the two of you don't know each other, in fact.
5. 8-10 cloves garlic, chopped; 1 European eggplant or 2-4 Japanese eggplants, cut into chunks; 1 can diced tomatoes; a handful of chopped fresh basil. Sautee garlic, add everything else, dump in some soy sauce and maybe a touch of hot sauce. Turn down heat, cover, simmer till everything is soft. Serve over rice.

Foundation by Isaac Asimov, said by Mayor Salvor Hardin.
It is possible that Asimov was paraphrasing someone else but probably more likely that they were paraphrasing Asimov.

Well, I'll say that he's been more consistenly good in Wes Anderson films than he has in years. How's that for compromise?

I've been answering My Friend the Chocolate Cake to a lot of folks, and given that it's a group my husband likes and you've got other stuff he likes on your interest list (tori amos, neil finn), I bet you'd like them too. 5. How about what Corran and I just decided to try in the next couple of days...fry up some mushrooms, bacon, and onions, roll in fillets of chicken breast, put in a dish and cook until the chicken is white, then take out, blanket with some smoky provolone and put it back in until the cheese is bubbly'n'browned. We will be trying this experiment on Monday night. :)

Corran mentioned that the Finns had a new album that he wants to get. I think he's hoping that his sister will bring it for him from Oz when she comes over in a couple of months.

Holy cow, she's practically my twin! Brilliant!

Yeah I know...I've more than once almost typed the wrong user name for one of you. I've considered introducing you two before but it never seemed to come up at a convenient time. :)

I take it there's a reason he's waiting for his sister to bring it from Oz? 'Cause I've seen it in the shops here.

Date: 2005-02-01 07:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kimberlychapman.livejournal.com
Is it reasonably priced in the shops? He generally doesn't bother looking in the US because of high import fees. But I'll tell him to look.

There's also the consideration that it's an easy belated Christmas/birthday gift for his family to send for him.

We're still hoping she'll bring a UK/Aus/NZ copy of the last Harry Potter book that came out, because we utterly refuse to have the altered US versions in our home. So far we've successfully managed to stay completely spoiler-free on that and the new one that will come out soon. Usually someone from Oz sends us the proper version faster than this, but last year a couple of US trips got cancelled so we missed out.

Date: 2005-02-01 04:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] biogeekgrrl.livejournal.com
I don't think the copy I saw was an import, I think it was a US-issue. So perhaps Corran would still like to wait for his sister to bring him a copy.

Sure! Radioland Murders is a generally silly, cheesy movie that I used to rent so often my mom bought me a copy.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven is fiction by Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie.
