First, must pimp this article from the Miami New Times about the religious beliefs of homeless children. It's one of the most beautifully heartwrenching things I've read in ages. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] blankbadge for reccing it to me.

Second. Saw Laurie Anderson last night, and I'm trying to find appropriate words to describe the subject matter let alone my reaction to it. It was a piece about space, time, love, violence, symmetry or the lack thereof, and the duality of human experience. It was thought provoking.

Need more coffee.

Ye gods. The deities of one religion (and in a very Catholic background I'm sure we can extend it to saints) usually become the demons of the next, but to see it evolving in kids, and picking up echoes from a great many other places (some of them not very nice) is extremely disturbing.

That's interesting. When I read it, I was struck more by the way these kids have created an entire belief system which is totally removed from adults, and even has specific "girls-only" knowledge. It's kind of jarring in a Lord of the Flies way.

From a psychological standpoint, the ramifications of their belief structure are huge. God isn't in charge, demons are after them every step of the way, and there is only fleeting help available. That's sad.

I don't know if I'd use "beautifully heart wrenching"; how about heartbreaking, how about something to lie in bed awake and shiver.

Just telling [livejournal.com profile] harrystamper about this and she tells me #1 daughter used to talk about Bloody Mary back in first or second grade. She hung around the edges of the playground at school.

We used to do the Bloody Mary thing at sleepovers. Late nights + lots of sugar can do funny things to perception.
