Due to layout etc. in the new apartment it makes sense for us to go for wireless internet access in the office. I've been reading a ton of reviews on Cnet. They are quite helpful but I'd also like to get some input from you guys. Specifically your opinions on:

  • wireless routers

  • wireless network adapters for our desktops

Things to keep in mind:
  • We're not total gearheads, so bleeding edge technology isn't necessary. However, I don't want something that will be obsolete next week either.

  • Ease of setup. I'm going to be doing this, and while I'm fairly analytical when it comes to biochemical networks I'm no engineer.

  • Tech support. You can never underestimate the helpfulness of decent tech support.

And in the Random Comment Department: my boobs feel big today. I blame Wendy.

In my experience for features, stability and ease of setup/administration you can not go wrong with D-Link.

What you probably want for wireless is 802.11G standard. At the store they might try to sell you on the 802.11N technology as it's "newer and faster", but is not yet an approved standard. G is the way to go for now. It's fast, easy and works with your 802.11B hardware as well. That router that I linked to has a built-in switch as well so basically you just plug the "Uplink" into your cable modem, any other computers into the regular switch ports and you're set. Plus the quick-start directions are easy. It's all web-based administration. Just set an encryption key, enter that same key into your wireless devices (laptops or what have you) and you should be good to go.

No problem. Usually Fry's has the D-Link DI-624 in stock. I had one from there but it was buggy and I took it back. At that point they were out so I had to get something else. But they've always been good to me. I'm considering picking one up because I'm dissatisfied with my current wireless router.
