Martha Wainwright played last night at the Casbah, and for all you poor unfortunate punk beeeyotches who didn't show up, all I have to offer is THE GIANT OBNOXIOUS RASPBERRIES OF SLOBBERY MOCKERY. That's for you buddy, yeah you in the back right there. Too cool to show up to see "a chick with a guitar." You sad little twerp, you didn't know what you were missing.

What was that precisely, you ask? It was a powerful, emotive, loose, commanding performance by a truly gifted and fearless musician. From the moment she climbed onstage with her band and traded her pack of Camels for her guitar, she owned the stage. This is a woman who's clearly used to out-shouting the drunks at the bar, and she confessed amused surprise at our polite attentiveness.

Who could blame us? She rocked out, she sang gentle versus that slowly worked themselves into impassioned choruses. At one point, she claimed she was "tired of playing guitar" and swapped whatever tune was on the setlist for a wonderful rendition of Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out backed by Brad Albert on piano. She finished the set with a rousing version of Bloody Motherfucking Asshole and barely had time to grab two quick puffs of a cigarette before she was called back to the stage. As an encore she treated us to a gorgeous French language song called "Dis, quand reveindras-tu?" and ended the show with GPT.

This was a great show, kids, the kind of show that makes you want to hang around and buy the headliner a shot and a beer. Martha Wainwright just might the kind of gal to take you up on it. Check her out when she's in your town.
