-I'm thinking about finally switching from a desktop to a laptop. Okay, only thinking, not doing. The truth is, although my PC is 3.5 - 4 years old and is certainly slowing down, it's still in pretty good shape. I really won't need to replace it for another year or so and I can't justify shelling out the cash for a new toy simply for the sake of getting a new toy. But a girl can daydream and sigh over CNET reviews, can't she?

Anyone have a laptop they want to squee over?

-I tried Opera a couple of months ago when version 8 first became available and really wasn't impressed. I quickly went back to Firefox. But the other day I was getting a little frustrated with Firefox's sluggishness and decided to see whether Opera was as annoying as I remembered.

It isn't. The interface is clean and easy to use, some of the incompatibility issues that so vexed me have been ironed out. I've been able to sort out the wacky cache issue that annoyed me last time, so I don't have to reload a page every time I navigate back. And the sucker is FAST. I have it installed at work (on the evil ancient Windows 2000 beast of doom) and at home. So far I'm pretty happy.

-Anyone have a Yahoo Mail Beta account? What's your impression?

I want to get a laptop to keep in my music studio/bedroom. That way I can have all my music programs and music files to myself, and won't have to worry about some virus getting into it since it won't be web-connected.

That's going to be some time down the road, however. Those things ain't cheap!

i recently bought myself a laptop - its great when im out on the road (especially when i find somewhere with an open network), around the house, or just curled up in bed.
however, i love my ultra-high res 19" monitor, and couldnt give it up, even for a 15.4" widescreen like the one on my laptop.
also couldnt give up my ergonomic keyboard, and my ultra-comfy mouse.
there are things that a laptop just cant do - and i really dont think i could affordably replace my much faster, much more powerful main machine on anything like the same budget.

I mainly like the idea of switching to a laptop to minimize the footprint my computer takes up (I have a rather small apartment and space is a premium). And I like the idea of portability-- not that I want a thin-and-light model, just that I like the idea of being able to pack it up easily.

I don't need heaps of computing power. I use email/web browser, Word, Excel, the odd PowerPoint. And iTunes. I used to do PC gaming, but since I've tried xbox I've pretty much stopped. (I still have my Final Fantasy discs though, can't give that one up.)

Given what I've said, I thought a laptop would be a good compromise/alternative for me. I'm happy to hear your opinions and advice, though.

hehe - thats just me...
for most people though, a laptop would make a pretty good replacement if space is a problem - youve just got to make sure that you buy one with a big enough processor, hard drive, and ram to do you for a while - cos it aint going to be cheap upgrading any of these things.
dunno about your side of the pond, but over here its far easier and cheaper to buy a laptop with everything you need (including wireless) than to buy a basic machine and then upgrade just SOME of the components.
as long as you buy from a reputable place and go for a decent brand, you shouldnt have any problems - the difficulty here being that most of the best brands you will never of heard of, and the one you have will be charging you for the name rather than the product.
i went for an acer machine, only to find that several of my friends have them, and swear by them - ive also heard good things about asus as well.

That's true here as well. And while I've always wanted to learn how to do those sorts of upgrades myself, I'm not yet savvy enough to be comfortable totally tearing apart my computer.

yeah, can you say "overpriced?" i knew you could. i've heard of acer machines but you're the first person i know who owns one. cheers for the rec. :)
