the world and her guitar
May. 16th, 2006 01:51 pmI'm a sports fan. I truly am.
virginmartyr1 and I follow the Padres; I was glued to ESPN.com the week before the NFL draft (AJ Hawk at #5 baby!); and I like running at the Y because I get to watch European Premiere league soccer -- er, football -- on tv. I like sports, period.
But I could care less about Barry Bonds passing up Babe Ruth's homerun record. All this hoopla for the man to be #2 in the record books? No thanks. Not interested. Now, if he stays in the game long enough to make a run at Hank Aaron's -- well I'll clap politely.
On the other hand, I fear I'm becoming a dyed-in-the-wool Lebron James fan. The Cleveland Cavaliers have never been a terribly impressive team;
virginmartyr1's comment was "There's basketball in Cleveland?" But the Cavs are in the second round of the playoffs, playing hard enough to have tied the series against arguably the best team in the Eastern division. What's impressed me is how Lebron has encouraged, inspired, passed, found the open man, and in general did everything a team leader should do to help his squad win the game. I watched the last 8 minutes of game 4 last night (8 minutes that lasted 41) and was impressed. When it comes to sheer physical ability and heart-stopping athleticism there are several NBA athletes that come to mind. Dwayne Wade is a phenomenal talent; watching him is a delight. But when it comes to leadership and being a team player, Lebron's in a class by himself.
