It's a science thing wherein members of a research group regularly meet to discuss current journal articles. Typically one person presents an article and the group discusses it.

You are correct. It is particularly not so much when it directly follows a 2+ hour lab meeting first thing on Monday morning.

Technically, yes. It's a practice that has its dubious origins in the academic world. I consider it to primarily be a method by which faculty can force their grad students to read papers, and have a handy forum in which to attack those peers who disagree with their pet theories.
