Um kay, haven't been commenting much on World Cup because SO.MUCH.SPORTS.OMG. Doesn't mean I haven't been following. (Actually, my whole company is in the throes of World Cup fever right now. The sports page is a hot commodity, trading for at least 3 packs of smokes on the blackmarket. Seriously.)

So. Here's the thing.

Sweden.
England.
Tie??

What the hell, people? You give up an early lead and let the Swedes tie the game in the last minute. Oh for shame! Your boys had better shape up; at this rate, I'll be putting money on the Germans to take the whole thing.

I haven't seen the Argentina-Netherlands match yet, so comments there. As for Mexico, they advanced and I'm happy. I'll be curious to see the Argentina-Mexico and Portugal-Netherlands matches, though.

Don't get me started about US-Ghana. Oy!

On that note...

I can't see Germany beating a quality team - their defence will struggle against Sweden and Argentina - assuming they get past Mexico - could run riot.

My money would be on Spain at this stage.

Really? I haven't seen them play yet, though I've heard that they're gelling and really impressive right now.

see, england have 2 major problems holding them back - the manager, and the team captain.
sven (the manager) has a belief that its possible to defend a 1 goal lead for an entire match, and thats what he tells his players to do - but thats extremely dangerous, especially against the better teams.
he also insists on playing certain people unless they physically cant get off their death-bed - if youre a core part of his team, then you play, wether youre fit or not.
or even if youre actually trying or not.
take a look at the defence - rio ferdinand USED to be the best defender in the world - now, hes decided that because he regularly plays for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and is guaranteed a place in the national squad, he doesnt need to try any more and has become quite possibly the laziest player ive ever seen.
he was taken off and replaced with sol campbell, who used to be the 2nd best defender in the world - then he had a bit of a breakdown, has barely played for his club since, andappearsa to have lost any ability that he once had. quite frankly, the guy needs putting out to pasture - the kind thing to do would be to take him out back, and put him out of his misery.
seriously - that 2nd goal - an on-form sol would have headed that out of the ground...

as for beckham - he refuses to lift the troops and lead them on - his attitude is "the boss says sit back and defend, so thats what we'll do".
and the guy just cant play free-flowing football - give him a dead-ball, and hes going to do something that will blow your mind - but otherwise, hes crap.

damn - should have just pointed you to my post on this matter...

yeah - weve played them more than just about any country going, but havent beaten them since 1968, or something stoopid like that.

I think it's a secret pact between our countries at high levels of government. We don't beat them at footie so long as they don't let Abba reform.

Oh I read your post. But if there's a bear in a tree, and I have a stick, well I'm just duty-bound to poke the bear, aren't I? ;)
