quesarah: java baby (coffee)

This weekend did not go as planned.

It was meant to be a weekend of immersion in baby cuteness -- Friday after work having dinner with S and her 2 year old girl, then on Saturday playing lazertag with F&J's two boys -- followed up with good old fashioned couple time.

Friday was good, although I was shocked to see that Kaylee is HUGE and talking and a small person now! Saturday on the other hand ....

...well, I spent the whole day dozing on the couch. I would occasionally get up to switch the laundry over, or flip unenthusiastically through the tv channels, but mostly I slept. And ate soup. And toast. And then slept. No lazertag. No cute little ones. No social activities at all. Just sleep.

Sunday, I had planned to make cooked apples and biscuits for breakfast. (I was surprised to find Jonagolds in my local market this week; I assumed I'd have to wait until autumn to see them in stores. But there they were, and I took it as a Sign.) I woke up feeling loads better Sunday morning, so I jumped right into cooking breakfast. I sliced up the apples and put them in a pan with a little butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Then I got out the flour to start the biscuits....

...and found little buggy guys. Naturally, if there are little buggy guys in the flour, there are little buggy guys everywhere. The next hour and a half was spent inspecting the pantry, throwing out roughly half of the stuff, and orchestrating an insect mass murder the likes of which have only been described in horrified whispers.

So we got bagels for breakfast. And then showered and got ready for chorus events.

So much for plan A.

Ugh, bugs! Were they perchance Sawtoothed Grain Beetles? Little black things, very small but longer than a flea, say? Pretty much harmless, but not very appetizing. We keep our Bisquick and the like in the fridge, and keep any flour/sugar in the pantry in sealed containers. Those suckers can strike at any time!

Hope you're feeling better and not so poorly. Although I have to say, that spending an afternoon on the couch, perhaps with a book, sounds like loads more fun than playing laser tag with children! But then that's just me. :)

not sure what kind of buggys they were...not black, but tiny little brown guys. they looked kind of like sawdust (which is possibly why we didn't notice them before. it was icky, but at least they were small. so, sadly, no biscuits, but we did end up with tasty bagels. :o)

Yuck, buggy biscuits! Ah well, they wouldn't have killed ya. But the bagels were prolly a better choice!

Biscuits will come at a later date, sans insects.

Maybe the buggy guys just wanted some biscuits? Huh? Did you ever think of that? Huh? So selfish!

If there comes a day when a bug approaches me in the kitchen and asks politely for biscuits, I will be happy to bake for it. Until then, they need to stay out of my dry goods.

Hee hee...sorry you were inundated with buggies, but that reminded me of something funny that happened here about 15 years ago.

My then-husband made supper for my grandmother and great-aunt (who were living with us at the time) and the kids, while I was at work. When I got home that evening, he told me he'd made pinto beans and cornbread - mine was in the microwave. With great anticipation, I reheated them, took them out, and got some butter. Just as I was about to butter it, I noted two very tiny dark little eyes sticking out of the cornbread. Upon further inspection, I noted that there were actually quite a few pairs of tiny dark little eyes.

Grossed out, I told Ron what I'd found. He looked faintly mortified, having given it to the kids as well as Grandma and Aunt Verla. Needless to say, I didn't eat any cornbread. The next day, we spent quite a while throwing out everything that wasn't in a can and scrubbing out the cupboards.

When I told Dad about it a few days later, he was nearly in tears from laughing at the thought of Grandma and Aunt Verla eating what came to be known as "Ron's worm-bread." ::giggles::

LOL! It was totally gross! Even after all those years I start laughing hard at the memory!
