Today's Little Yellow Bus Award goes to [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples, a dubious little organization dedicated to making fandom safe for kids. But that's not the point of this post; I am neither condemning nor celebrating their cause and y'all can have whatever opinion you want on the issue, I don't care.

The thing is, they've created a Black List. The authors on that Black List have been asked to lock down their fic so it's inaccessible to minors. The repercussions? A boycott.

A boycott. They won't read or review the work of any author whose name appears on their list. Do they honestly think that will stop a given author from writing fic? My gut says no, that fic is often written for the author's own pleasure and as such can exist in a vacuum. There are no real damages that can be sustained by any of the authors as a result of such a boycott. As such, the whole whoderah is an idiotic wankfest of gigantic proportions that succeeds only in letting a bunch of chest-thumping yahoos stomp loudly and complain.

As [livejournal.com profile] wafflelips and I discussed yesterday, people really are stupid.

Climb on the bus, kiddies.

Oh no! Not a boycott!

Lame, really. Um, what kind of 'children' are they concerned about? 14? If so, shouldn't their parents be monitoring their online time? And face it, teenagers get away with shit. I was reading my dad's playboys and penthouse when I was 12. Yeah, I'm scarred for life....

Short bus. Yep.

you were "reading" playboy?

I don't know what exactly we are talking about here (but that never stopped me before) How graphic are you talking about? Yeah teenagers get away with stuff and parents are supposed to play defense and protect them.
Playboy at 12 is early but not outrageous. I think i first saw one at about 10, and in jr. high, had friend who would sell his dads old copies!
But that was playboy. I think blacklists are stupid too, but i've also got a 10yr old who i don't want reading graphic fiction. Then I really had to work at it to get a hold of something. now it is very easy, and yes a parent has to monitor but i guess before at least the walls of the house were; well, walls.

That's cool and I respect your opinion, but that wasn't my point.

My point is that this is an exercise in futility of the highest order. These people are boycotting stories, written by amateurs and posted in a not-for-profit forum. A boycott will have little to no impact. Hence, [livejournal.com profile] fandom_scruples gets to ride the Little Yellow Bus.

Agree that the boycott is lame.

But all think the whole exercise to protect children from all the horrible NC17 stuff is just a bit much anymore.

she's right

Yes you are correct; that wasn't your point.
How about this; a boycott is more like a pep rally; or "circle the wagons boys". "We are us, they aren't". Anyone who would boycott some sort of literature probably isn't reading it anyway. Or about power, someone making a name for themselves.
Friday already, have a good weekend

Has no one learned anything about boycotting? Boycotting is the best advertising campaign EVER. Don't be surprised if readership goes UP thanks to their silly boycotting.

If you really want to stop something, you need weaponry. Or mind altering chemicals.

Pah. People will never learn.

I have to say, you've made the most sense on this matter so far. Bravo! What you said!

Thanks! At first I was really offended by their community, "The Black List", etc. The nerve! Who do they think they are? Buncha McCarthyist bastards! And so on.

But in the shower this morning I realized just how pointless their boycott is. And how...dumb (thoughtless, if you prefer) they are. And it made me laugh, so I decided to share. :)
