virginmartyr1 gave my hard drive to one of the IT guys at her company. He said that it's obvious that it's spinning up, but he thinks the read head must be broken because it won't read any info.*meep*

virginmartyr1's computer. It appears in the device manager but there's no information under Properties. When I hit the setup menu on startup and tell BIOS to autodetect the slave drive, it comes up as unreadable.
I will be very upset if I can't salvage any data off the old hard drive. Financial records, years of collected recipes, music files, photos, icons, my Dexter mood theme... lots of irreplaceable stuff.

This morning, my computer gave me the following error:
PXE-EX1: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Boot failure: System halted
As I understand it, this means my computer tried to boot (likely from the cd, then the floppy, then the hard drive, then the network) without success. Which probably means my hard drive is fried.
1. What are the appropriate tests I can do (in excrutiatingly precise detail, please) to verify if this is the case?
2. If this is the case, what can I do to salvage my data?

I'm checking out some of the Bioinformatics classes that are offered Winter 2006. The only class currently offered is Intermediate Perl Programming. OK that's over my head, so let's check out the prerequisite class Introduction to Perl Programming. Prerequisites for that class are: " Familiarity with UNIX, C and/or Bourne shells. The C programming language and sed/awk/grep is recommended."
OK, I have a passing familiarity with UNIX -- been a while since I've used it but I'm sure it'll come back. But C? Never used it. Here's my question: is this a topic that I'd be better off taking a class to learn? Or should I just grab a good reference and get reading?

technogoly thoughts
-I'm thinking about finally switching from a desktop to a laptop. Okay, only thinking, not doing. The truth is, although my PC is 3.5 - 4 years old and is certainly slowing down, it's still in pretty good shape. I really won't need to replace it for another year or so and I can't justify shelling out the cash for a new toy simply for the sake of getting a new toy. But a girl can daydream and sigh over CNET reviews, can't she?
Anyone have a laptop they want to squee over?
-I tried Opera a couple of months ago when version 8 first became available and really wasn't impressed. I quickly went back to Firefox. But the other day I was getting a little frustrated with Firefox's sluggishness and decided to see whether Opera was as annoying as I remembered.
It isn't. The interface is clean and easy to use, some of the incompatibility issues that so vexed me have been ironed out. I've been able to sort out the wacky cache issue that annoyed me last time, so I don't have to reload a page every time I navigate back. And the sucker is FAST. I have it installed at work (on the evil ancient Windows 2000 beast of doom) and at home. So far I'm pretty happy.
-Anyone have a Yahoo Mail Beta account? What's your impression?

Due to layout etc. in the new apartment it makes sense for us to go for wireless internet access in the office. I've been reading a ton of reviews on Cnet. They are quite helpful but I'd also like to get some input from you guys. Specifically your opinions on:

- We're not total gearheads, so bleeding edge technology isn't necessary. However, I don't want something that will be obsolete next week either.
- Ease of setup. I'm going to be doing this, and while I'm fairly analytical when it comes to biochemical networks I'm no engineer.
- Tech support. You can never underestimate the helpfulness of decent tech support.

Minor complaint: the housemates have a Mac Powerbook G4 running either IE for Mac or an app called Safari. Both of these browsers BLOW. They both randomly quit all the time and neither of them display all that great.
Does anyone know if Firefox for the Mac works well?king_ghidorah, are you using it?

He just posted his feelings on the recent changes/improvements the Gmail staff have made to the service. Big geeky happy feelings, they were.
I too am geeked about the increase in mailspace. I've really gotten accustomed to the labeling/search functions and like them a lot. Now with rich text formatting, I'm hooked for good. Gmail is the way to go.

Recently, wafflelips realized that owning a laptop had switched from being a neat idea to being necessary. After spending a fair amount of time reading reviews and pestering Mr. woe2you and king_ghidorah for advice, she decided on the type of gear she wanted. She then sent me out with instructions to purchase the gear while she did homework.
I follow instructions rather well. We're now the proud parents of a lovely little HP notebook. I'm using it right now to update, hitch-hiking on a neighbor's WAN. I'm enjoying myself, but I know that any minute now T will decide she'd rather do her work on the new toy, at which point I'll be booted off.
Still. Yay!
