Okay, now I need to sort out why the color scheme went all wonky when I added the layer. More later.

I think you need to set the layer to the layout scheme, i.e. colour scheme you want it to before you create it. That way it should stay in the scheme you want it rather than the default.

Does that make sense?

Yep, got it sorted. Had to download the info for the auto theme first.
